The Coalition for National Trauma Research seeks to enhance trauma research by:
- Advocating for sustainable research funding commensurate with the burden of disease
- Coordinating research efforts across professional organizations that span the continuum of injury care
- Strengthening the infrastructure for multicenter investigation
We encourage the multi-institutional trials committees of each of our member organizations to identify opportunities to address critical clinical questions through multi-center interventional studies that could be submitted to external funding agencies with the support of CNTR.
We also welcome individuals interested in applying for grant funding (e.g., DoD, NIH, PCORI) to submit a proposal to CNTR for review by our Scientific Advisory Council. If approved, CNTR staff will collaborate with the investigator on grant submission.

WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF CNTR-SUPPORTED PROJECTS?
In line with our mission, we are interested in supporting projects that advance trauma care across the continuum of care including injury prevention, pre-hospital care, acute hospital care, rehabilitation & long -term recovery, and trauma system development. We welcome investigators from all specialties interested in advancing trauma care.
WHAT TYPE OF COLLABORATION IS CNTR INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING?
CNTR does not provide direct funding for projects, but partners with investigators on applications to funding agencies. Application support is prioritized for mid-career investigators who seek to transition from K to R01 awards, from bench to bedside research, or from single-center to multi-center projects. Generally, CNTR collaborates on multi-center projects that require additional research infrastructure not available to the typical investigator. In addition to research proposals, CNTR also partners with investigators on funding proposals for conferences and other educational programs.

Pre-Award
- Evaluation of trial design
- Identification of sites for multi-center trials

DOES THE STUDY REQUIRE FUNDING TO BE SUPPORTED BY CNTR?
While CNTR conducts pre-award services with the understanding that funding for any given proposal is never guaranteed, the project must meet CNTR’s review criteria, be targeted to an appropriate and likely source of funding, and include a study management role for CNTR should funding be awarded. Studies seeking to leverage the ACS TQIP data platform for data collection will require a subcontract to the ACS, which CNTR can facilitate.
WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA THE SCIENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE CONSIDERS, AND WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR REVIEW OF THE PROPOSAL?
The CNTR Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) reviews proposal submissions for their relevance to the mission, study fit with identified sources of funding, institutional support, proposed role for CNTR, and strength of the initial study protocol. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER SUBMITTING MY GRANT THROUGH CNTR?
CNTR is a national coordinating center for research; as such, the CNTR staff and senior investigators have extensive experience in supporting grant applications to the DOD, PCORI and the NIH, with a high rate of success in achieving funding. Through its member organizations, CNTR can leverage several resources to facilitate your study and enhance the prospect for funding. These include:
- Review of the proposal and mentorship from senior investigators
- Ability to identify sites with the appropriate patient population and expertise to contribute to your study
- Access to the TQIP data platform to support data collection for the trial
- Access to trauma survivors to engage in PCORI submission
- In-house expertise in geo-spacial mapping
- Expert staff to support grant submission, reporting requirements, regulatory management, and subcontracts

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE OF THE APPLICATION DEADLINE DO I NEED TO SUBMIT THE CNTR PROPOSAL?
Depending on the complexity of the proposal, we recommend submission at least three months prior to the application due date.
