CNTR has gained momentum since 2006, when Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (TX) requested funding for the National Trauma Institute that ultimately supported 16 studies across the country, NTI–and then CNTR–has garnered increasing support for its funding requests from members of Congress.
Without a national home for civilian trauma-related research, such as an NIH for Trauma, CNTR’s requests are usually for additional funding within the Department of Defense Health Programs budget for trauma-related research that has military significance. CNTR then competes for those dollars by submitting research proposals for high-priority projects.
More recently, CNTR has diversified its funding portfolio with awards from PCORI, AHRQ, NIH and BARDA.

The restructuring of NTI into CNTR will allow it to continue its success in advocating for and obtaining funding for injury-related research.
